National Eye Health Week

 National Eye Health Week!

Its National Eye Health Week and did you know that 1.8 million people in the UK are living with sight loss? For over half of these, a simple eye test and a set of new glasses could really help!

Getting your eyes checked regularly can help with the early detection of glaucoma, high blood pressure and even diabetes.

At Sweeney Opticians Eye & Hearing Care, part of the 3fivetwo Group, we are delighted to join with National Eye Health Week 2016. Read our top tips below for maintaining good eye health below.

  1. Get your eyes tested regularly

Ensure you get your eyes tested every two years and if you have been prescribed glasses, make sure you wear them!

  1. Maintain a healthy diet

Eating food rich in vitamins and antioxidants can help prevent retinal damage. Fruit and veg such as kale, spinach, broccoli, corn, carrots and oranges are all excellent choices. Oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel are also beneficial.

  1. Don’t smoke

After aging, smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing macular degeneration. It also increases your chances of developing cataracts. So put the cigarettes down!

  1. Limit your alcohol intake

Excessive drinking can lead to a host of serious health problems and can increase your chance of developing cancer. It can also have a detrimental effect on your eye health so it’s important to limit your intake and beware of national drinking guidelines.

  1. Always wear eye protection in bright sunlight

The sun not only damages our skin but can also be dangerous for our eyes. Always wear eye protection in bright sunlight and never look directly at the sun.

  1. Exercise

Keep active! Maintaining a good lifestyle and exercising regularly leads to a host of benefits including reducing the likelihood of certain eye conditions. Exercise can reduce the risk of sight loss from narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes so get off that sofa and stay active!

This week have a think about your eye health and make of point of looking after your eyesight!

3fivetwo Group Acquire Sweeney's Eyecare Chain

By Administrator on 2015-11-23

New brand incorporates Optique and offers seamless treatment pathway

3fivetwo Group, Northern Ireland's leading private healthcare company, has acquired eyecare retailers Sweeney Opticians.

The move is part of a continuing programme of restructuring and expansion which inside six months has seen the 3fivetwo Group invest £4.5m in Kingsbridge Private Hospital in Belfast and also acquire St Joseph's Hospital, Sligo.

The new chain, operating under the Sweeney Opticians Eye and Hearing Care brand, will incorporate Optique Eye and Ear Care, which is already part of the 3fivetwo Group.

Optique, as it was previously known has moved out of its previous location to operate out of new, larger premises with onsite parking facilities right next to the newly expanded flagship Kingsbridge hospital on the Lisburn Road.

The acquisition deal will also see the rebranding of existing Sweeney optical retail units in Donaghadee, Portaferry and Newtownabbey.

Richard Sweeney, Managing Director of Sweeney Opticians Eye and Hearing Care, said: "Sweeney's have earned a proud reputation over the last 12 years for serving local communities with quality eye and hearing care and that isn't going to change.

"What will change is that we will become the only local optical practice able to offer seamless eyecare and hearing pathways, from testing to treatment to surgery, via the technical and medical expertise of the 3fivetwo Group.

"This includes access to Ireland's only 4D eye scanner for the early detection and treatment of optical conditions, first class hearing services including new wax removal by suction instead of irrigation, and domiciliary homecare options."

Sweeney Opticians Eye and Hearing Care will continue to showcase some of the world's leading eyewear brands including Dior, Jimmy Choo, Rayban, Gucci, Tom Ford, TAG, Silhouette and Oakley.

Patients requiring eye or ear surgery will be treated at Kingsbridge, where their new imaging centre has just installed a £1.5m state-of-the-art MRI scanner, offering same-day scans as well as CT scans and a bespoke outpatients department.

The centre also hosts a new National Sports Injury suite and physiotherapy offering.

3fivetwo Group's expansion plans for 2016 will further boost a multi-million pound turnover business which employs 240 people and utilises the services of over 400 consultants and 300 local nursing staff on a regular basis.

The Plight For Sight

By Administrator on 2015-09-22

“50% of sight loss can be prevented” – Optometry NI.

Following the success of the 2014 National Eye Health Week, in which 66% of the adult population in the UK vowed to take better care of their eyes, the build-up for this year has unsurprisingly followed suit, with record numbers of practices and health organisations taking part.

And we at Optique Eye & Ear Care are delighted to join with National Eye Health Week 2015 in order to help expose the largest possible segment of the population to the benefits of regular check-ups and treatment, not only in helping to detect easily overlooked diseases such as Glaucoma, but also helping to find early signs of diabetes or high blood pressure.

With facts such as it being possible to prevent 50% of sight loss through early detection and care (for example through 4D Eye Scans), it comes as no surprise that there has been such a positive response. Especially when it is considered that 1.8 million people in the UK are living with some level of sight loss – the equivalent of the entire population of Northern Ireland.  And this figure is on track to increase without intervention as every 5 seconds someone in the world goes blind; while more specifically in the UK 100 people a day begin to lose their sight.

Therefore the support for National Eye Health Week has continued to grow as people have realised how easy it is to avoid such a massive loss, with 86% agreeing that eyesight is the most valuable of the 5 senses.

Optique Eye & Ear Care offer Ireland’s first 4D Eye Scan which, unlike standard eye scans, helps with the detection of glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration.
