 National Eye Health Week!

Its National Eye Health Week and did you know that 1.8 million people in the UK are living with sight loss? For over half of these, a simple eye test and a set of new glasses could really help!

Getting your eyes checked regularly can help with the early detection of glaucoma, high blood pressure and even diabetes.

At Sweeney Opticians Eye & Hearing Care, part of the 3fivetwo Group, we are delighted to join with National Eye Health Week 2016. Read our top tips below for maintaining good eye health below.

  1. Get your eyes tested regularly

Ensure you get your eyes tested every two years and if you have been prescribed glasses, make sure you wear them!

  1. Maintain a healthy diet

Eating food rich in vitamins and antioxidants can help prevent retinal damage. Fruit and veg such as kale, spinach, broccoli, corn, carrots and oranges are all excellent choices. Oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel are also beneficial.

  1. Don’t smoke

After aging, smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing macular degeneration. It also increases your chances of developing cataracts. So put the cigarettes down!

  1. Limit your alcohol intake

Excessive drinking can lead to a host of serious health problems and can increase your chance of developing cancer. It can also have a detrimental effect on your eye health so it’s important to limit your intake and beware of national drinking guidelines.

  1. Always wear eye protection in bright sunlight

The sun not only damages our skin but can also be dangerous for our eyes. Always wear eye protection in bright sunlight and never look directly at the sun.

  1. Exercise

Keep active! Maintaining a good lifestyle and exercising regularly leads to a host of benefits including reducing the likelihood of certain eye conditions. Exercise can reduce the risk of sight loss from narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes so get off that sofa and stay active!
